A day after the rocket propelled grenade (RPG) attack at Sarhali police station in Tarn Taran, police on Sunday took stock of security arrangements at public places including the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT), railway station and public parks by conducting surprise inspections.
Sharing details, police commissioner Mandeep Singh Sidhu said the team conducting the inspections involved an anti-terrorist squad and anti-sabotage team and it comprised deputy commissioner of police (DCP, investigation) Varinder Brar; ADCP-I Rupinder Kaur Sra; ADCP- II Suhail Qassim Mir,; four ACPs and over 50 personnel including station house officers (SHOs) of police stations.
The team checked luggage of passengers and also interacted with residents at public parks to find out if they have any safety concerns.
The police commissioner added that surprise check will instill confidence among residents and create a sense of security. “We have started night patrolling and have received encouraging results, as a carjacking incident which took place at 1.30 am was cracked within two hours.”
Sidhu said similar operations will continue across the city, where police will cordon, search, raid and randomly check vehicles at various locations. He added the cops will be deputed in civil clothes in various areas to keep a check on suspicious activity.
Within hours after the RPG attack on Saturday, police had beefed up security outside police stations and posts in the city, especially those on main roads.
Bomb threat keeps police on toes
Meanwhile, police conducted probe after residents of a multi-storied apartment on Pakhowal Road received letters threatening a bomb attack.
In his complaint to police, Amit Narang, a resident of Centra Greens Apartment on Pakhowal Road, said that he and 10 other residents of the apartment received the registered letter.
It stated that Narang has committed a fraud of ₹16 crore and there will be a bomb attack at the apartment if he does not return the money.
Soon after receiving the information, police control room (PCR) vehicles were deployed at the entrance of the apartment.
The vehicles entering the apartment and bags of delivery executives were being checked.
Deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Varinder Brar said that a team of three ADCP level officers have been deployed to investigate the matter. Brar said there is no need to panic as prima facie, the matter appears to be a monetary dispute.
“However, the team is investigating the issue from all angles and the case will be cracked soon,” Brar said.
It is learnt that Narang’s brother has returned from Dubai recently. Police are checking the occupation of family members and business dealings to zero in on a suspect.
The police commissioner said that some miscreants are trying to use the aftermath of the RPG attack as an opportunity to spread panic. He said that those found guilty will be sternly dealt with.
