Ludhiana: Rajasthan man held with 3kg opium

Khanna police arrested a suspected Rajasthan-based smuggler with 3kg of opium during a checking drive on Sunday.

The accused Deputy superintendent of police (DSP, Khanna) Vinod Kumar said police received a tip-off that a man was coming from Rajasthan to supply opium in Punjab. Acting on the information, police laid a check post in Khanna and intercepted Shanti Lal, a resident of Chittorgarh in Rajasthan.

During the search, 3kg of opium was recovered from his bag, following which he was arrested.

The DSP said preliminary investigation revealed that the accused had been involved in smuggling opium from Rajasthan and supplying it in different parts of Punjab for some time.

Police are now probing his network to identify associates and trace the supply chain.

A case under the NDPS Act has been registered.

The accused will be produced before a local court and police will seek his remand for further questioning.
