Police on Wednesday arrested a person for allegedly removing idols from a temple in Fatehgarh Mohalla and vandalising its premises, with preliminary inquiry indicating the incident is linked to a land dispute.
The incident came to light on Monday morning when a local resident, Chhote Lal, visited the temple and found the sanctum empty and the premises damaged. According to the complaint, the temple, around 50 years old, is located on a small plot adjoining a house and is frequented by residents for daily worship.
Locals alleged that two youths from the area were involved in the theft alleging that idols were deliberately removed.
Additional deputy commissioner of police Ramandeep Singh Bhullar said the property is registered in the name of one of the accused, who allegedly removed the idols to take possession of the land. A case has been registered under Section 298 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. One accused has been arrested, while efforts are underway to apprehend others.
