The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Ludhiana Zonal Unit, on Saturday seized 12kg opium concealed in seven courier parcels booked from Ludhiana and bound for various locations in the United States and Canada, officials said on Sunday.

Acting on specific intelligence inputs, DRI officials intercepted the courier parcels at a courier office in Ludhiana, suspecting them to be carrying contraband in violation of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. The parcels were subsequently subjected to a detailed examination.
During the search, officials recovered 30 packets of contraband that had been cleverly concealed inside utensils and adult diaper pads.
The smugglers had attempted to pass off the illegal consignment as household and food items in an effort to evade detection. “The recovered packets were found to contain 12.118kg of opium, with an estimated market value of ₹60.59 lakh. The consignment was seized on Saturday under the provisions of the NDPS Act,” said an official.
“Further investigation is underway to identify the persons involved in the smuggling racket and trace the international network linked to the consignment,” the officer added.
