The 75th Junior Punjab Basketball Championship for boys and girls began on Friday at Gurusar Sudhar, drawing 22 teams- 11 each in the boys’ and girls’ categories, from across the state. The teams, having qualified from five zones, will first compete in group stages, with the top four advancing to a round-robin league.
The championship was inaugurated by Shivkamal Singh, PPS, in the presence of Tejpal Singh, chairman of Pungrain, Teja Singh Dhaliwal, secretary of the Punjab Basketball Association, and several dignitaries including Charanjit Singh Gill and Sarpanch Harjinder Kaur.
The event, organised by Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Sports Club, Sudhar, under the supervision of the Punjab Basketball Association, saw an impressive start. In the men’s section, Sangrur defeated Amritsar 77–56, while Jalandhar edged past Faridkot 60–55. In the women’s section, Mansa registered a strong 48–40 win over Khanna and in the fourth match, Shri Muktsar Sahib overpowered Fatehgarh Sahib 34–21. The tournament will continue till November 3, with many national and international players adding excitement to the competition.
