Punjab forest minister Lal Chand Kataruchak on Thursday inaugurated various new attractions for visitors and facilities for animals at Chhatbir Zoo.

Among the new attractions for the public is a Nature Interpretation Centre that displays the zoo’s history and the role played by zoos in conservation of wild animals.
The centre also features interactive displays regarding the state bird, state animal, state tree and state aquatic animal of Punjab. Information with respect to wetlands of Punjab and the timeline of gharial’s reintroduction in Beas river is also displayed.
An open-air Zoo Education Plaza, which has a seating capacity for more than 100, was also inaugurated. The venue will be utilised for routine awareness and education programmes about forests, wildlife and environment conservation for visitors and schoolchildren.
Principal chief conservator of forests (HoFF) RK Mishra said earlier the minister inaugurated the revamped animal kitchen where their daily feed will be prepared while following scientific protocols for safety, biosecurity and cleanliness.
A critical care unit for carnivores at Lion Safari, set up as per internation standards with temperature and humidity control, was also inaugurated.
Dera Bassi MLA Kuljit Singh Randhawa was also present on the occasion.
