Police have arrested a man and recovered more than 5kg of heroin from his possession at a checkpoint set up near Chandiwala village in Ferozepur on Tuesday.

Ferozepur senior superintendent of police (SSP) Bhupinder Singh Sidhu said the action was taken following an intelligence input that a smuggler carrying a large consignment of narcotics was moving in the area.
The accused, identified as Manjit Singh, 45, of Chandiwala village, was intercepted with 5.507kg of heroin and was taken into custody, the SSP said.
A case has been registered under Sections 21, 61 and 85 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act at the Ferozepur Sadar police station. Preliminary investigations revealed that the accused does not have a previous criminal record, the SSP added.
