The Punjab Police have booked Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, general counsel and founder of the banned Khalistani organisation Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), for mutiny for his recent video in which he was seen exhorting Sikh soldiers of the army to stop defending the Indian borders and gather at the Akal Takht to join the “Khalistan referendum”.
Pannun has been booked under Sections 131 and 132 of the IPC (abetting mutiny, or attempting to seduce a soldier, sailor or airman from his duty; and abetment of mutiny, if mutiny is committed in consequence thereof), Section 153 (provocation with intent to cause riot) and Section 505 (1) (for making publishes or circulates any statement or report containing rumour or alarming news with intent to disturb communal harmony) and Section 506 (criminal intimidation).
The video was uploaded on YouTube on June 4 and has been deleted after a complaint by the Punjab Police. The provisions of Sections 10 and 13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, has also been imposed.
The FIR reads that Pannun has also committed unlawful activities being a member of a proscribed organisation, which has been declared an unlawful association by the Government of India. The FIR was registered after taking legal opinion from the state government. Pannun has recently been booked by the Himachal Pradesh Police in a couple of cases.
