Residents point to no traffic signal in Sunny Enclave where Mercedes killed biker

Residents say that despite multiple crossings within a 500-metre radius, the road near Sunny Enclave acks speed breakers, warning signboards, traffic lights and CCTV surveillance

A day after a 21-year-old motorcyclist was killed in a hit-and-run involving a Mercedes in Sunny Enclave, eyewitnesses alleged that overspeeding and lack of traffic-calming infrastructure on the stretch contributed to the fatal accident. Deceased Arjun, who hailed from Uttar Pradesh, resided in Palsora and worked at a sewing unit in Sunny Enclave. According to locals, he was returning home from work when the accident took place on Thursday evening.

Arjun, 21, from Palsora lost his life in the mishap in Sunny Enclave on Thursday.

Police said a Mercedes car (CH-01-AC-0038) rammed into Arjun’s motorcycle from behind. The accused driver abandoned his vehicle and fled the spot.

Kamal, a shopkeeper near the accident site, said Arjun was on his side of the road when the car approached at very high speed while continuously honking from a distance as the driver couldn’t control the vehicle due to its high speed.

Another eyewitness said the impact was so severe that Arjun was flung nearly 10 to 15 feet into the air before landing around 25 metres away from the point of collision. “It was clearly a case of reckless driving and overspeeding,” he said.

The stretch remains highly vulnerable as it connects Airport Road to New Chandigarh and also links several residential pockets and service roads. Residents pointed out that despite multiple crossings within a 500-metre radius, the road lacks speed breakers, warning signboards, traffic lights and CCTV surveillance.

“This accident is the umpteenth accident at the same spot this year itself. It is a multiple-point intersection, but there is no speed breaker, no traffic signal, no speed warning sign, no dedicated traffic police deployment and no CCTV cameras,” said a Rajyashree Prasadresident of the area.

Arjun was rushed to the Civil Hospital in Phase 6, Mohali, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

ASI Kulwinder Singh, investigating officer, said police have impounded the car. “A case has been registered. We are examining CCTV footage from the area. The accused will be arrested soon,” he said.
