Dhuri deputy superintendent of police Gurpreet Singh said the incident occurred on February 21, when police learnt that the victim had been thrashed by Balwinder.

He said the victim recorded a video before consuming a poisonous substance, alleging torture by Balwinder forced him to take the extreme step.

Police said that the victim was referred to Rajindra Hospital, Patiala, where he died on February 22. A first information report (FIR) was registered at the Dhuri Sadar police station under sections 108 (abetment of suicide) and 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt) and the provisions of the SC/ST Act were added later during the investigation.

The victim’s family on Monday staged a protest at Katron village, refusing to perform the last rites until the accused was arrested. However, they called off the protest the same day after receiving assurances of a fair and timely investigation.
