The decomposed body of an unidentified man was found stuffed in a plastic sack in a deserted area in north Delhi’s Wazirabad near Burari on Monday morning, police said.

Deputy commissioner of police (north) Sagar Singh Kalsi said that a passerby saw a human leg dangling from a white plastic sack near Bund Road around 8am on Monday, and alerted the police.

A police team reached the spot--a green area covered with water where people living in neighbourhoods nearby dump their garbage--and found the bag tied. They opened it and found a decomposed body of a man, aged between 30 and 40. No identification marks or documents were found on the body or near the spot, the DCP said.

He added there seemed to be no visible injury marks on the body. Police have registered a case of murder and formed teams to identify the deceased man and nab his killers.

The body was sent to a government hospital mortuary for an autopsy to ascertain the exact cause of death, said DCP Kalsi.

A police officer said that since it was an unidentified human body, they initiated a procedure to ascertain its identity. A message was flashed on wireless sets across police stations in Delhi regarding the recovery of the body. The details and photographs of the body and the bag were also shared with the police stations. The same details were also uploaded on the zonal integrated police network (Zipnet) under the “unidentified dead bodies” category, which can be accessed by police in at least seven states, including Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.

A list of men who have gone missing in the past fortnight or so in the Delhi-NCR is being prepared. “Prime facie, it seems that the man was murdered somewhere else and his body stuffed in the sack was thrown in the isolated place to mislead the police and avoid its identification. We are scanning CCTV cameras installed on the roads leading to the spot to identify the vehicle used to transport the body. We have also activated our human intelligence network,” the officer added.

Last month, severed and decomposed body parts of an unidentified man with the head and torso missing were found in plastic bags kept in an open field near Kalyanpuri, behind the Cyber police station of the east district. Two days later, the missing head was found, but in a decomposed condition. The torso could not be found, and the case remains unsolved.
