Gurugram police chief tells cops to ease vehicle checks for women, elderly

Commissioner Shivasa Kaviraj directed staff to avoid unnecessary disruption and maintain a fear-free environment.

Gurugram police commissioner Shivasa Kaviraj has directed traffic and field personnel not to stop vehicles carrying women, children or elderly persons during routine checking drives, officials said on Sunday.

The directions were issued during a review meeting chaired by Kaviraj on May 22, attended by senior traffic police officials, including the deputy commissioner of police (traffic), assistant commissioners of police, traffic inspectors and station house officers of traffic units. Written guidelines have been issued to field personnel.

According to police, the meeting reviewed traffic enforcement measures, road safety initiatives and crime-control strategies in the city. Officials said the commissioner stressed that vehicle checking should focus on crime prevention and public safety rather than merely issuing challans. Police observed that vehicles carrying women, children and elderly passengers were frequently stopped during roadside checks, leading to inconvenience and complaints from residents.

Police said the commissioner also directed personnel to conduct checking drives professionally without unnecessarily disrupting traffic movement and to maintain a “fear-free and secure environment” for residents and commuters.
