MCG officials inspect Jharsa, Sector 31 drains

A team from the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG), along with additional commissioner Pooja Chanwaria, on Wednesday inspected the clogged drainage networks in Jharsa and Sector 31 and found waterlogging on the service lanes of the underpass.

The action follows an HT report published on Monday, citing open garbage dumping along expressway corridors in Gurugram, which often leads to clogged drainage systems.

A spot check by HT on Wednesday found slowed vehicle movement in Sector 31 and Jharsa underpass due to waterlogging for more than 24 hours, with damaged drainage covers and manholes creating hazards for motorists passing through the stretches.

Earlier on July 2, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) directed the municipal authorities to take action against unauthorised garbage dumping along NH-48 and ensure free flow of drains. The drains were found to be choked due to horticulture, domestic, construction, and demolition waste.

In a letter to the MCG, NHAI had expressed concern about the dumping of garbage by local vendors and commercial establishments into recently de-silted drains at least six traffic-dense stretches and intersections.

Chanwaria told HT that drainage networks in the identified areas will be cleared as a priority to prevent waterlogging. “Our sanitation teams will strictly inspect these stretches regularly. Both MCG and NHAI will coordinate to ensure that no waste dumping happens along expressway drains.

Chanwaria said penalties will be issued against contractors if any lapses are found on their part following an inquiry into the matter.

Meanwhile, NHAI officials said cleaning and desilting efforts are underway at 20 critical locations, including Hero Honda Chowk, Iffco Chowk, Signature Towers, from Millennium City Centre to Atul Kataria Chowk, and Rajeev Chowk. “Damaged drain covers and open manholes in these areas will be replaced,” a senior official said.
