A 28-year-old man and his 19-year-old woman partner were arrested for allegedly assaulting a septuagenarian after he refused to lend them ₹50. They later snatched ₹20,000 from his wallet, Gurugram police said on Sunday.

Police said that the incident took place at Bhawani Enclave in Sector 9 on Friday afternoon, adding that the suspects Sumit Kumar and Anshu were arrested on Saturday and were produced before a city court.
According to investigators, during interrogation, the suspects said that they snatched the money to purchase psychotropic substances for themselves.
Police said that the victim, identified as Babulal (70), was sitting with some local residents when the two suspects suddenly approached him on a motorcycle and asked him to give them ₹50.
Investigators said that the victim refused, after which they assaulted the elderly man by picking up roadside stones. They said the suspects forcibly took out his wallet in which they found ₹20,000 and fled.
Police said that by the time local residents rushed to Babulal’s rescue, he had sustained deep wounds in the forehead and face.

{{/usCountry}}Investigators said that the suspects are addicted to psychotropic substances for which they had asked for the money from the victim.
Manoj Kumar, station house officer (SHO) of Sector 9A police station, said that both wanted to use the money for personal pleasure. “We have come to know that they are drug addicts. Kumar was involved in a criminal case earlier,” he added.
On the victim’s complaint, an FIR was registered under Section 34 (common intention) and 379B (committing or attempting to commit snatching, causes hurt or wrongful restraint of fear of hurt, in order to effect escape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Sector 9A police station on Friday night, police said.
