Eight medal winners in Birmingham Commonwealth Games hailing from Uttar Pradesh, including four silver medallists, will be entitled to a total cash prize of 5.25 crore as per the policy of the state government.

These athletes would be awarded on ‘National Sports Day, on August 29, if everything goes according to plan. Overall, India finished fourth in the medals tally with 61 medals, including 22 gold, 16 silver, and 23 bronze. In the 2018 Gold Coast Games, Uttar Pradesh athletes won two golds, one silver, and a bronze.

Lalit Kumar Upadhyay, a member of the silver-winning men’s hockey team, women’s cricketers Deepti Sharma and Meghana Singh, who won silver and race-walker Priyanka Goswami, who also clinched silver in 10,000m, will get richer by 75 lakh each as per the state’s sports policy.

Judoka Vijay Kumar Yadav, wrestler Divya Kakran, javelin thrower Annu Rani, and member of the bronze-medal-winning women’s hockey team Vandana Katraiya would receive 50 lakh each.

Besides them, five other athletes, including Seema Punia (discus throw), Punam Yadav, Purnima Pandey (both weightlifting), Rohit Yadav (javelin), and Sarita Singh (hammer) would be getting 5 lakh each as participation money.

At the 2018 Games, weightlifter Punam Yadav and shooter Jitu Rai won gold medals, whereas Seema Punia and Divya Kakran finished with silver and bronze medals.

The three-fold hike in the prize money for the medal-winning athletes at the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, and World Cup was done in January this year after chief minister Yogi Adityanath made such a promise during the cash award distribution to the Tokyo Olympics medal-winning athletes at a function here in Lucknow.

Besides cash awards, all the eight medal-winning athletes will also be entitled to government jobs in different departments under the ‘Uttar Pradesh international games medal winners direct recruitment rules-2022’.
