AAP to field candidates for all mayoral seats, wards in civic polls

After its spectacular win in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) polls, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is looks to make inroads in Uttar Pradesh. As such, it will field its candidates for all mayoral seats, wards in civic bodies and nagar panchayat seats in the upcoming urban local body elections in the state, said the party’s state in-charge of the civic polls, Sabhajit Singh.
Mahindra Singh, another AAP leader, said the party was taking the civic polls in Uttar Pradesh seriously. “In the MCD polls, people voted AAP to power. In Gujarat, we were able to register our presence. The party is taking the Uttar Pradesh civic polls seriously,” said Mahindra, AAP’s state media in-charge, AAP.
The party has, meanwhile, began screening candidates. Between November 20 and 30, it had organised 800 meetings of party workers across U.P, and appointed 77 office-bearers to conduct more such meetings as the party looks to strengthen its presence in nagar panchayats with the “gandagi hatao, jhadu lagao” campaign.
As part of its campaign, the AAP is targeting the Yogi government on the “lack of infrastructure and facilities” in government-run primary schools.
“Till date, all efforts of the AAP to make its presence in the state’s politics have failed. Now, the party is seeing an opportunity in the civic polls,” said a political analyst.
Meanwhile, the ruling BJP, which came to power in the state in March 2017 and won its second term in March this year, has also begun screening candidates for the civic polls.
