Uttar Pradesh deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya has said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) welcomes the two-year-jail awarded to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a criminal defamation case over his remark during the 2019 Lok Sabha election. “Four years ago, he (Rahul Gandhi) had made derogatory remarks against the backward community,” Maurya added.
Addressing a press conference at the BJP state unit office here on Friday, the deputy CM said, “Rahul Gandhi has publicly called the members of the backward community thieves. The court’s decision shows that the law and the Constitution of the country are supreme. In the eye of law, all citizens of the country are equal.”
“The decision of the court also proves that no matter how big a person is, if they have committed a crime, they will definitely be punished,” he added.
“Cutting across castes and creeds, people should condemn the unrestrained and objectionable remarks made by the Congress leader against the backward classes. The BJP had condemned his statement four years back and again we are condemning it even today,” Maurya said.
“Despite being sentenced by the court, the way Rahul Gandhi and Congress party leaders are justifying the derogatory remarks clearly shows the intention of the Congress leaders and their thinking about OBC community,” he added.
“Rahul Gandhi is acting like a monarch. He is insulting the Constitution and backward community who wish to live with respect and self-esteem. Rather than apologising, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge is trying to justify the derogatory remarks. It proves that the Congress thinks that insulting OBCs is their right,” the deputy CM added.
“The Congress should stop believing that his family and he are above the country. If Rahul Gandhi thinks that he is above the Constitution and the law of the country, it is his mistake. If Congress leaders believe that they can abuse the citizens of their own country, the Constitution of the country has given the OBC community the right to approach the court against them,” he said.
“After being sentenced by the court Rahul Gandhi and Congress leaders are playing the victim card. They should know that there is rule of law in the country,” Maurya added.
