Civic body looks to rename Firozabad to Chandra Nagar
Twelve members of the Nagar Nigam executive committee participated in the voting process on the proposal and 11 of the corporators voted in its favour, says mayor
AGRA A proposal to rename Firozabad, in Uttar Pradesh, to Chandra Nagar was approved by the municipal corporation on Thursday, mayor Kamini Rathore said on Friday.

The proposal, which was first made byBharatiya Janata Party (BJP) corporator Avneesh Valmiki, was approved by 11 out of 12 members of the Firozabad Nagar Nigam executive committee on Thursday. The plan seeks to rename the city after Raja Chandra Sen, who ruled the region in the 16th century, people familiar with the matter said.
“Twelve members of the executive committee participated in the voting process on the proposal to rename Firozabad to Chandra Nagar on Thursday. Eleven of the corporators – seven from the BJP, two from the Samajwadi Party (SP) and two Independents – voted in favour of the proposal, while one corporator, Rehan, from the SP, was of the view that there was no need for such an exercise,” Rathore said.
“The proposal will be taken up at a meeting of the Nagar Nigam board, in a week or two. Once cleared, the proposal will be forwarded to the state government for approval,” she added. Former corporator and BJP leader Surendra Singh Rathore said: “The demand for naming the city as Chandra Nagar is a public sentiment and many already write Firozabad as Chandra Nagar. It is an old demand that needs to be met”.
Opposing the proposal, SP state unit secretary Avnindra Yadav: “It has become a tactic of the BJP to raise issues of name change instead of raising real issues faced by the public. Firozabad Nagar Nigam is in paucity of funds and is failing in updating the civic amenities.”
Last month, a proposal to rename Aligarh as Harigarh, was unanimously approved by the city’s civic corporation and subsequently forwarded to the state government, which is yet to give its approval.
Once the municipal corporation’s proposal is cleared by the Yogi Adityanath-led government, Firozabad will be added to the list of places renamed in the state. In 2018, the state government changed the name of Faizabad to Ayodhya district and a year later, Allahabad to Prayagraj..
