She was later admitted to the district hospital.

The police were able to identify the woman later and informed her family members. She is a resident of an area under the Sahibabad police station and had gone missing from her house on May 15. Her husband, who arrived at the district hospital, said she was his first wife and he married again due to her failing mental health.

“She said various things when we arrived at the hospital. First, she said she was picked up by some men in an autorickshaw, who later assaulted her. Then, she said that she went to a vacant plot and stayed there. Since she is of an unsound mind, we will ask her about what happened later. For now, she has been sent for a medical examination,” said the man claiming to be her husband.

“She had been undergoing treatment in Bareilly for the past eight to 10 years, but could not recover. On May 15, she followed me when I was going to the market and probably lost her way. Once we speak to her, we will lodge a complaint,” he said.

“Her husband made her stay at his native place in Shahjahanpur and had brought her here recently. She probably lost her way and could not find her way back after that. On Saturday morning, she was found without clothes and we immediately sent our officials to get her admitted to the hospital. Her medical examination is being conducted and we are awaiting the reports. She has not been able to tell us what happened to her after she went missing from her home,” said Parshu Ram, station house officer (SHO), Sihani Gate police station.

He added that her family was free to lodge a complaint in the matter if they suspect that she was assaulted.
