The first seat allotment list for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) was released on Wednesday morning. Most students who ranked within the top 100 opted for IIT-Bombay as their first preference and have been placed there.
“I had mentioned Computer Science in IIT-B as my first preference and managed to get through. I couldn’t be happier,” said 17-year-old Rahul Bharadwaj, a resident of Colaba who secured AIR 20 in JEE-Advanced. “I want to pursue a career in Artificial Intelligence and this is my first step,” he added.
According to data released by the organising chair for Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) this year, most applicants and the top ranks have opted for the four-year computer science course in IIT-Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kharagpur.
Arjit Singh (AIR 53), another student from Mumbai, was relieved when he saw that he had secured a seat in the computer science department in IIT-B. “I did not rank according to my expectation as I had hoped to score enough for a rank between AIR 20 and 25. I am really glad that I still managed to get through to the institute of my choice,” said the 17-year-old.

JoSAA usually allots all seats--10,988 in 22 IITs and 36,208 seats across all National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and other Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs), in the first round itself.

These bonus marks boosted overall performance of majority students, making way for 50,455 eligible students for admission this year as compared to 36,500 in 2016.
Nitin Diwakar (18), son of an auto driver and a resident of Kandivali managed to bag a seat in the Chemical Engineering department of IIT-B. “I thought I could get a seat in the mechanical engineering department but I also want IIT-B, so looks like I’ll stick to this,” said Nitin.
