Maharashtra cop tries to avoid pothole, gets crushed by truck

The truck driver, who fled the spot, was later arrested and a case was registered against him under various sections.

A 49-year-old traffic policeman in Maharashtra’s Ambernath, after swerving to avoid a pothole, was crushed by a truck that hit his bike, causing him to fall under the wheels of the vehicle, late on Tuesday.

Sanjeev Patil, who was a resident of Kansai in Ambernath (East), is survived by his wife and two sons.

“He was trying to avoid the pothole just outside the Ambernath police station on the Kalyan-Badlapur road, when the truck hit his bike from behind. He fell down and the truck ran over him,” said Yogesh Chalwadi, a social worker, who was at the spot when the accident happened around 9.15pm.

Patil was rushed to the nearby Central Hospital in Ulhasnagar, where he was declared dead on arrival.

The truck driver, Sardar Sinha, 30, who fled the spot, was later arrested. “We have arrested the driver,” said TK Sawant, sub-inspector, Ambernath police station.

A case was registered against Sinha under sections 279, 337, 338, 304(A) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 184, 134 (A) (B) of the Motor Vehicle Act.
