Mumbai: A three-year-old girl died after being electrocuted in the Shanti Nagar area of Wadala on Thursday, police said. The incident occurred shortly after electricity supply was restored in the locality following a two-day outage.
According to police, the victim, identified as Rehana Saddam Hussein Khan, came into contact with an iron ladder near her home. Investigators suspect that a live electric wire had come into contact with the metal staircase, causing electric current to pass through it. The child was electrocuted when she attempted to climb the ladder.
Her mother also suffered minor injuries while trying to rescue her, police said.
Police have registered an accidental death report (ADR) and launched an investigation into the circumstances that led to the incident. Officials are examining whether negligence on the part of any agency or individual contributed to the tragedy.
Police have written to the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking and are also questioning local residents to determine how the live wire came into contact with the ladder.
Authorities said they are probing responsibility for the lapse that resulted in the child’s death.
