MUMBAI: In a major operation, the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) on Wednesday suspended the licence of iconic ice-cream parlour K Rustom & Co for not maintaining proper hygienic conditions.

During the raid on the almost 80-year-old outlet located near Brabourne Stadium on Veer Nariman Road, the FDA team reportedly found live rats and house flies in it. There were also stocked expired products.

The FDA said that K Rustom had failed to follow cold chain operation norms besides not maintaining mandatory records of food stocks. It said that the ice-cream parlour had violated the hygiene provisions of Appendix 4, and on account of these “serious deficiencies”, it had ordered immediate suspension of its license issued under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

As of Tuesday, the FDA inspected 16 eating houses, of which 10 establishments were issued with improvement notices, while the licences of two outlets were cancelled. It also seized goods worth ₹9.6 lakh in the form of prohibited food items like gutka and paan masala.

The inspections are part of the FDA’s statewide ongoing drive to check the quality of food and dairy products with a particular focus on hotels, restaurants and dhabas.
