Food delivery agent robs woman of jewellery worth ₹10.20 lakh

Thane: A delivery agent from popular food delivery service, Swiggy, allegedly entered a plush housing complex in Panchpakhadi Thane on the pretext of delivering food and looted a resident’s house off diamond jewellery worth ₹10.20 lakh. He pretended to ask her for water and threatened her on knife point when she returned with a glass. The Naupada police have registered a case against him.
The incident took place on Wednesday 8.30 pm, when the complainant, 39 was home with her 12-year-old son. The delivery agent rang the bell and asked for water from the woman. She had not ordered food but agreed to give him water on humanitarian ground.
An officer from Naupada police station said, “The accused is 20-25 years in age and entered the house after the woman went inside to get water. He then took out a knife and threatened to kill her if she did not lead him to her jewellery. He fled with the ₹10.20 lakh diamonds and gold jewellery. The complainant with the help of her family members approached us. We have registered case under IPC 452, 392 and 509 against the unknown man.”
Senior police inspector, S Dhumal said, “The society has CCTV camera and have security guards who maintain register but the number that the accused have given is fake and due to mask his full face is not recognisable. The women apparently didn’t order anything but she agreed to offer him water. The man has Swiggy bag, t-shirt and parcel for someone but we are checking all the details of the man through Swiggy as well as through our own sources.”
Swiggy in a statement issued to media said, “We are aware of this unfortunate incident in Thane. The enforcement authorities are investigating the identity of the accused. We are extending our full support to fast-track the investigation.”
