Superintendent of police Soumya Sambasivan has transferred 12 cops to police lines and ordered an inquiry against them after catching them extorting money from vehicle drivers at the Kala Amb barrier.

The top cop also lifted the barrier and directed the deputy superintendent of police (DSP) to submit a report within five days. The cops are set to face suspension and a criminal case once the charges against them are proved in the probe, sources said.

Police sources said Sambasivan, dressed in uniform, paid a surprise visit to barrier on Tuesday evening and caught the cops, who were unmindful of her presence, red-handed, adding that the top cop had also gathered evidences against the cops.

They said there were regular complaints to the higher ups in the police department regarding the cops extorting money from vehicle drivers and even issuing slips as acknowledgment.

Meanwhile, a delegation of residents met the top cop on Wednesday requesting to restore the Kala Amb barrier. However, they failed to get her nod.
