With Lt Colonel Harjit Singh Sajjan making his mark in British Columbia by winning the South Vancouver seat, his native village Bambeli in Punjab was seen celebrating his feat on Tuesday.
As the victory news reverberated across the village, many villagers expressed happiness over Harjit’s achievement. Vijay Bambeli, a fellow villager and writer termed Harjit’s victory in the parliamentary elections “a result of hard work and sincerity”.
He further added, “He was a bright mind. We, in the village, would often tell him that one day he would become a scientist but we are proud that he proved his mettle as a military officer. We hope that as a parliamentarian he would bring more honour to the Punjabi community”.
However, village sarpanch Paramjit Singh looking forward to Harjit’s visit to the village said, “We will accord him a grand welcome”. “The entire village was praying for his victory. It is a proud moment for all of us”, added Star Club president Inderjit Rana.
Though, Harjit’s parents had migrated to Canada when he was a child but they never lost touch with their roots. His father Kundan Singh comes home every year and contributes to the socio-economic development of the village. He has been actively associated with Chief Khalsa Diwan society in Canada.

{{/usCountry}}Harjit joined the Armed forces and became the first Sikh to take command of a British Columbia regiment. He was the recipient of Order of Military Merit. Before joining the army he was a police detective officer.
Harjit is married to Kuljit Kaur, a physician. They have two children.
