21-year-old arrested for beating woman, her brother on Ghaziabad street

The Ghaziabad police on Thursday arrested a 21-year-old man who allegedly molested and beat up a 21-year-old woman in public view on a street in Sahibabad on Tuesday, and said videos of the incident was widely shared on social media.

The police identified the suspect as Rohan Chaudhary and said he was arrested by the Link Road police from near the Sahibabad bus depot after the woman’s brother, 28, lodged a police complaint.

“My sister and I were going to the local market when the suspect stopped us midway and started beating me up. When my sister intervened, he assaulted her too and touched her inappropriately. Seeing this, locals intervened. The suspect then threatened both of us and abused us verbally in front of the crowd,” the brother said in his complaint to Link Road police.

Based on his complaint, the police registered an FIR under Indian Penal Code sections 354 (molestation), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult) and 506 (criminal intimidation) at Link Road police station.

“Chaudhary and the woman’s brother used to be friends. But owing to some dispute, the woman’s brother complained about Chaudhary to his mother. This annoyed Chaudhary and he allegedly assaulted both siblings on the street. The incident was also captured by CCTV cameras and the footage was later widely shared on social media. The suspect was arrested and an FIR lodged,” said Bhaskar Verma, assistant commissioner of police (Sahibabad).
