The incident occurred under the jurisdiction of Ayarkotha police station. Acting on a tip-off that Rohit Kumar alias Golu was supplying liquor ahead of the Holi festival, a police patrol team led by a woman officer reached the Chilbila Bridge area and arrested him after recovering Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) from under the back seat of his scooter.

The patrol team informed Ayarkotha police station, following which a constable was directed to escort the accused to the police station by sitting pillion on the scooter. However, instead of heading towards the station, the accused allegedly sped off in another direction in an attempt to escape. The scooter went out of control and rammed into an electric pole.

Rohit Kumar, 25, a resident of Darihat, died on the spot. The constable, Aftab Alam, sustained critical head injuries. Superintendent of police Raushan Kumar said the accused had several cases registered against him, including liquor smuggling, and had previously been jailed.

The body of the deceased has been sent for post-mortem examination, while the injured constable is currently undergoing treatment.
