: Thousands of devotees took a holy dip in the river Ganga in Varanasi on Thursday on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. The ghats were crowded since the early morning hours. After the ritual bath, many devotees enjoyed traditional food made from jaggery. To help pilgrims cope with the cold weather, the Varanasi Nagar Nigam (VNN) made special arrangements at major ghats.

Under the guidance of mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari, free hot tea was distributed at Assi Ghat, Dashashwamedh Ghat and Raj Ghat. Mayor Tiwari contributed ₹5,000 from his personal funds to start the initiative. VNN officials also donated money from their own salaries and savings. Bonfires were lit continuously at the ghats and on major roads to keep devotees warm. Thousands of people benefited from these arrangements.
The civic body also carried out a special cleanliness drive at the ghats. Extra lighting was installed, and temporary changing rooms were set up, especially for the convenience and dignity of women devotees. “Our aim is that every devotee visiting Kashi experiences our tradition of hospitality and service. Cleanliness and convenience are our priorities,” said mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari.
