The Delhi Police on Wednesday launched “Fit Ho India-Swachh Ho India” campaign to celebrate the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri Jayanti.

At an event organised in association with Jamia Millia Islamia University, Delhi Police chief Amulya Patnaik, flagged off a 3-kilometre plogging exercise from the university till Dhobi Ghat near the Yamuna bank in south Delhi’s Jamia Nagar.

More than 500 people, including the varsity’s students, local residents, members of police’s YUVA scheme and newly recruited police personnel, participated in the plogging, a run to aware people about healthy and clean living.

“During the run, participants while jogging picked up plastic and other wastes along the route, promoting the essence of Swasth (fit) and Swachhta (cleanliness) in life. The run that started around 3.30 pm culminated at Dhobi Ghat,” said deputy commissioner of police (southeast) Chinmoy Biswal.

Thereafter, a special cleanliness drive – “Cleanathon” was also organised on the banks of river Yamuna. More than 400 participants divided into four teams collected plastic and other garbage from the Dhobi Ghat. Joint commissioner of police (southern range) Devesh Chandra Srivastva felicitated the best team of the ‘Cleanathon’.

Addressing the participants and crowd, the police commissioner said that the younger generation can take the “Fit Ho India-Swachh Ho India” campaign forward and make it a grand success in future. Patnaik emphasised that the campaign should not be a one-day affair.

“The students and other participants should spread this movement of fitness and cleanliness to other areas as well,” said Patnaik while thanking the university’s vice-chancellor, Nazma Akhtar, for supporting the campaign.

All the participants took pledge to devote themselves for clean surroundings and spare two hours every week for cleanliness. They also promised to nominate 100 more persons to carry forward this movement of Swachh Bharat Mission.
