As schools are reopening from next week and a surge of Covid-19 cases is reported in the state, only 51 per cent of students between the age group of 12 and 15 years of age have received the first dose of vaccine in Pune district. The district has reported less vaccination than the overall Maharashtra state, as per the data furnished by the district health department.

For the age group of 15 to 18 years, the first dose beneficiaries are around 67 per cent in the district.

So far in Maharashtra, 3,266,002 children between the age group of 12 to 15 years are inoculated and 6,692,520 children between the age group of 15 to 18 years are fully vaccinated.

In Pune district, till June 6, at least 276,001 beneficiaries are fully vaccinated in the age group of 12 to 15 years and at least 621,020 beneficiaries have received the jabs in the age group of 15 to 18 years.

Dr Sanjay Patil, chairman of the Indian Medical Association’s (IMA) Hospital Board of India, Pune chapter, said that it is important to take both doses.

“It is important to complete the inoculation. Both doses ensure that the person is safeguarded against the virus. After taking vaccination, if the person tests positive we have seen that symptoms are mild and complications are also less. Hence both doses should be administered in the given time,” said Dr Patil.

Dr Rajesh Deshmukh, district collector, Pune, also issued orders on Tuesday urging beneficiaries who have taken their only first dose, should finish their inoculation by taking the second dose.

“The week May 29 to June 5 have reported 50 per cent more vaccination than the previous week. Covid-19 protocols should be followed and testing and vaccination should continue to ensure that the cases are in check. Vaccination should be done under the ‘Har Ghar Dastak’ initiative to ensure that every individual is inoculated,” said Dr Deshmukh.

He further added that every taluka in the Pune district should have a functional Covid-19 Care Center (CCC).

“Every taluka should have at least one functional CCC and the health department should be prepared with oxygen and Covid-19 medicines in case there is a spike in cases,” said Dr Deshmukh.

On Tuesday, Pune district reported 131 fresh cases and active cases stood at 562, according to the state health department.
