Pune: Pune police crime branch officials have arrested five persons and detained a minor in connection with the attempted murder of Akshay alias Bapu Balu Mhaske. The accused were arrested from the Ekvira Devi hill area on Thursday.
They were produced before a Pune court, which remanded them to police custody till May 27.
The firing took place near Samvidhan Chowk on Wednesday, around 10.30 am. Akshay is the brother of Akash Mhaske, one of the accused in the Vanraj Andekar murder case. Akshay sustained injuries in the attack and is currently undergoing treatment at Bharati Vidyapeeth Hospital.
Police registered a case at Sahakarnagar against 12 persons, including notorious gangster Suryakant alias Bandu Andekar and Krushna Andekar, in connection with the attack.
The arrested accused have been identified as Aftab Sharif Syed of Bhagyoday Nagar near Vaishali Nursing Home in Kondhwa Khurd, Rishiprasad Mohan Ambat of Chudaman Talim, Avez Ashpaque Shaikh of Ganesh Peth, Vedant Srinivas Temgire of Palkhi Vithoba Chowk in Bhawani Peth, and Aman Farooq Baghwale of Golden Grace in Bhawani Peth. Police said all are active members of the Andekar gang.
