PUNE: The standing committee on Tuesday attempted to allot a tender to increase the capacity of garbage processing units without first adding the proposal to the agenda. However, after strong protests from the opposition parties, the ruling party decided to follow the due process for allotment.

Congress leader Prashant Jagtap said, “The administration had put the proposal to increase the capacity of garbage processing plants up to 500 metric tonne without any tender process. We opposed it, pointing out that allotting such a big tender without following the administrative process is wrong. Finally, it was decided that the proposal will come on agenda by following the process and kept on record in front of the committee.”
The PMC had planned to increase the capacity of the garbage plant located at Uruli Devachi by 500 metric tonnes and hand it over to private parties for maintenance for the next 10 years. The planned fee was ₹695 per metric tonne.
This decision follows the merger of 34 villages into the city, which increased garbage generation. The corporation now needs to process 2,300 metric tonnes of garbage daily but does not have the capacity for it.
