The Pimpri-Chinchwad police have arrested a 36-year-old man for allegedly murdering his grandmother over a dispute related to jewellery.

According to the police, the accused allegedly strangled the elderly woman to death with the intention of stealing her ornaments. After confirming her death, he allegedly removed jewellery worth around  ₹25,000 from her body. (REPRESENTATIVE PHOTO)

The incident occurred on May 2 around 8 pm in Karanjvihire village in Khed taluka. The case was registered on May 8, and the accused was arrested the same day. He has been identified as Kailas Kundalik Margaj. The 80-year-old victim Sindutai Vithoba Margaj (80) was his grandmother.

According to the police, the accused allegedly strangled the elderly woman to death with the intention of stealing her ornaments. After confirming her death, he allegedly removed jewellery worth around 25,000 from her body.

Police said the accused then attempted to destroy evidence by packing the body in a gunny bag and dumping it into the Bhima river.

The case came to light after local authorities began investigating the woman’s disappearance. During the probe, police reportedly collected evidence that led to the arrest of the accused grandson.

Sachin Mahadik, sub-inspector, North Mahalunge MIDC Police Station said, “We have arrested the accused.”

Officials said investigation is in progress to recover the stolen jewellery and establish the sequence of events.
