PUNE: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is planning a 200 million litres per day (MLD) water treatment plant at Khadakwasla to strengthen the city’s long-term water supply. The municipal commissioner, Naval Kishore Ram, on Wednesday discussed the availability of 2.5 hectares of land for the project with officials of the Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS).
Ram visited the CWPRS campus at Khadakwasla and held discussions on making the land available to the civic body for the proposed treatment plant.
“The project is part of a new water supply scheme for 16 villages merged into the PMC limits, for which the civic body has secured ₹890 crore under the Urban Challenge Fund from the Centre,” Ram said.
“Visited CWPRS, Khadakwasla, today and discussed making 2.5 hectares of land available for PMC’s proposed 200 MLD Water Treatment Plant. Got ₹890 crore under Urban Challenge Fund for new water supply scheme in 16 villages. The project will strengthen Pune’s long-term water security and benefit around 13 lakh residents of newly merged villages,” Ram said in a post on X. (sic)
The proposed plant is expected to augment water treatment capacity and support the expansion of the city’s water supply network to the merged villages, which have faced gaps in water infrastructure following their inclusion in the PMC limits.
The availability of land at Khadakwasla is expected to be a key step before the civic body proceeds with detailed planning and implementation of the proposed project.
