The standing committee approved the proposal on Friday. Naval Kishore Ram, municipal commissioner, said the plan also includes 12 compactors and 11 bin lifters. With the new vehicles, PMC’s fleet will rise to about 880 mini garbage vans.

PMC studied waste generation, property density, and cleanliness norms before finalising the number of vehicles needed. The rental cost will cover a driver, fuel, one helper, and five collection rounds a day, said officials.

The civic body currently operates 542 vehicles—379 owned by PMC and 163 hired from contractors. However, officials said this is not enough to handle the city’s waste load. The shortage has led to delays and complaints from several areas where waste often remains uncollected.

With the approval to hire additional vans, PMC expects daily waste collection to stabilise and improve across the city.
