PUNE As the district and most of the parts in Western Maharashtra faced floods last year, Pune district collector on Thursday held a meeting with the disaster management committee to discuss pre-monsoon preparations.
District collector Rajesh Deshmukh, Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) metropolitan commissioner Suhas Diwase, police officer Abhinav Deshmukh and Pune Zilla Parishad chief executive officer Ayush Prasad along with irrigation department and Indian Metrological Department (IMD) officials were present for the meeting.
This week Shiv Sena leader and Maharashtra legislative council president Neelam Gorhe also held a meeting to discuss pre-monsoon preparations. Divisional commissioner Saurabh Rao and district collectors from all the five districts falling in the Pune division were present for the meeting.
Deshmukh said, “For the past few years were are facing flood-like situation in parts of the district. Some parts are getting excess rain and some are rain shadow areas. The administration must be prepared for monsoon and has identified the flood-prone areas.”
“Many development works are going on in the district considering that authorities need to take precautions at development sites. After two years, there are chances of having Pandharpur Wari. The Dehu-Alandi to Pandharpur wari is held during the monsoon. So, administration must ensure that there would be no waterlogging,” he said.
Deshmukh said, “Pune district has many tourist places and every year there are some incidents during the rainy season. In this background, the administration needs to put information boards and make people aware of do’s and don’ts.”
Diwase said, “As per the situation last year, many places are witnessing heavy rain in a short period and this is blocking the drainage system. Even the irrigation department needs to release more water discharge in a short period. By considering that irrigation department and local bodies jointly need to remove encroachments from the river.”
Pune Zilla Parishad promised to keep enough medicine stock in all the health centres.
