Maharashtra transport minister Pratap Sarnaik will chair a special meeting with experts from the field, literary figures, and senior administrative officials on Thursday as the state takes steps to mandate auto, taxi and app-based drivers to speak Marathi from May 1.

Key discussions will focus on the mandatory use of Marathi, strategies for effective implementation, and the framework for driver training programmes.
Despite a government resolution passed in 2019, several complaints have surfaced regarding its poor implementation across the state. The transport department has resolved to strictly implement the decision on the occasion of Maharashtra Day. As part of the initiative, emphasis will be placed on developing structured training programmes to teach Marathi.
“This decision is not merely administrative, but a step towards preserving and promoting the pride of Marathi language,” said Sarnaik.
