The suspects — Nilesh Laxmansingh Pardeshi (25) of Wadgaon, and Rahul Ganpatrao Biradar (30) of Dehu — allegedly monitored the activities of the woman, a health consultant, this month.

According to the police, the woman complained to the police that the duo used to follow her. She alleged that they clicked her photographs and forwarded it to another person whom the police did not identify.

Based on the complaint, Narayan Shirgaonkar, assistant commissioner of police (crime), instructed his team and arrested the suspects on Sunday.

Earlier on Saturday, a police team in civil dress laid a trap at a hotel in Koregaon Park. As soon as the complainant reached the hotel, the accused started clicking her photos from a distance, and the police initially detained them.

“During investigation, it was found that Pardeshi was running a private detective agency and Biradar was his accomplice,” said Shirgaonkar.

Another official said that the detectives were hired by a businessman family although police have not been able to trace the person. “We are trying to trace the person who hired the detective. His phone is switched off, but we have obtained the call detail records (CDR),” said the officer on condition of anonymity. The officer said that the private detectives were paid 4,000 per day for monitoring the complainant’s activities between January 1 and January 7.

“The suspects do not know the name of the person who had given them the contract. They have received 34,000 through UPI mode,” said the officer.

A case has been registered against the accused under Sections 354 D (stalking) of the Indian Penal Code and other sections of the Information Technology Act.
