Auqib Nabi’s bold belief finally pays off, makes big admission after call-up: ‘Your job is to perform’

Auqib Nabi admitted that he had some expectations as he was called up as Jasprit Bumrah’s replacement for India’s upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka. Nabi was not part of the original squad, but Bumrah’s injury opened the door for the Jammu and Kashmir pacer to earn his maiden senior call-up. He enjoyed a breakthrough 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season, claiming 60 wickets to play a key role in helping Jammu and Kashmir win their maiden title. Nabi also impressed during India A’s tour of Sri Lanka in June-July, taking six wickets across two first-class matches. His selection also marks a historic moment, as Nabi has become the first cricketer from Jammu and Kashmir to receive a call-up to India’s senior Test team.

Nabi revealed that he had started to believe a Test call-up was within reach after his impressive performances in domestic cricket and for India A. Despite not being part of the original squad, the Jammu and Kashmir pacer kept his focus on performing and waiting for his opportunity.

“Yes, I had expectations. But as a cricketer, you have to have the mindset that your job is to perform. The rest of the people will watch you. I did think I would get a call-up," Nabi said while speaking to Saransh Jain in a BCCI video.

The 29-year-old reflected on the belief and patience that kept him going through his journey, saying he always trusted that his performances would eventually earn him an opportunity with the Indian team. The pacer insisted that his focus remained on doing his job on the field and leaving the rest to fate.

“Today or tomorrow, I will join the Indian team because you have been doing well for so many years; you have to reap the fruits of your hard work. I had the same mindset when I bowled; my job is to take wickets and the rest is up to God," Nabi said.

“I feel good whenever I get a call-up. My family is happy; I cannot ask for more," Nabi added.

Bumrah's injury a concern

Meanwhile, Bumrah’s injury has emerged as a major concern for India, given his importance to the bowling attack and the team’s preparations for next year’s ODI World Cup. The 32-year-old has endured a series of injury setbacks in recent times, making his fitness a key priority for the team management. Bumrah has not bowled since the second ODI against England in Cardiff on July 16, where he suffered an impact injury. With India heavily reliant on his pace and experience, his prolonged absence could be a significant concern ahead of the World Cup.
