Day 3Session 2
England beat Pakistan by an innings and 103 runs

Commentary

3:12 PM IST See you at Lord's - That brings us to the end of a one-sided contest, with England dominating Pakistan to take a 1-0 lead in the series. The hosts will now look to finish the job at Lord's, while Pakistan will be desperate to bounce back and force the series into a decider. The second Test gets underway at the iconic Lord’s on Thursday, August 27, at 10 am GMT. As always, you can join us early for all the build-up to what promises to be a fascinating contest if Pakistan get their act together. Until then, cheers and goodbye!
3:14 PM IST Showed great maturity in managing conditions - The victorious skipper of England, Joe Root, hails a brilliant all-round performance from England, praising the clarity with which they approached the Test despite coming straight off the Hundred. He feels the bowlers consistently found the right areas and, once England got ahead, the team showed great maturity in managing the conditions. Root is particularly excited by the variety within the bowling attack and the complete performance they produced. He also praises Jordan Cox for coming in at No. 3 and showing great calmness in bowling-friendly conditions. Root says England took the game as it came and made the most of opportunities to put Pakistan under pressure by scoring quickly. With a different challenge awaiting at Lord’s, he knows there is time to prepare, but for now, he is simply keen for the team to enjoy a brilliant performance.
3:05 PM IST England have outplayed us - The captain of England, Salman Agha, admits that England have simply outplayed them and that his side have made too many mistakes throughout the game. He feels their batting is inexperienced in these conditions, while the bowlers failed to make the most of the moisture available when they had the ball. Despite that, Salman backs his pace attack, pointing out that they have bowlers capable of hitting 140kph and believes they can bounce back in more favourable conditions. He is particularly pleased with Ali Usman’s effort with the ball and also praises Abdullah Shafique’s batting. Salman stresses the need to cut out the mistakes and come back stronger in the next Test, while hoping Babar Azam’s return provides a boost to the batting unit.
3:08 PM IST PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Ollie Robinson wins the award for his amazing bowling display with match figures of 8/80. He reflects on an encouraging return, admitting he is pleased to make an immediate impact despite not feeling completely in rhythm. He says the pitch offered plenty for the seamers, with the ball moving both ways, and reveals that a demanding six-week period working with the ECB medical team on his fitness had helped him maintain his pace across both innings. Robinson acknowledges that he is still working his way back to his best, but was encouraged by the start. He also explains that he looked to bring the ball back into the batters in the second innings, as the surface had slowed and was offering less movement than it did earlier in the first innings.
2:57 PM IST Presentation Time...
3:15 PM IST Moving Day turned into Victory Day - They say a Test match moves along on Moving Day, but this one raced towards its conclusion. England added 43 runs to their overnight score, stretching their first-innings lead to 238, before Jofra Archer struck early to remove both Pakistan openers. Abdullah Shafique and Shan Masood offered some resistance, but Ollie Robinson broke that stand and, after Lunch, Josh Tongue blew the game wide open with three wickets in his first two overs, reducing Pakistan to 76/6. Robinson added two more to his tally, while Gus Atkinson fittingly picked up his first wicket of the game before Archer returned to seal the deal, bowling Pakistan out for 135. Mohammad Rizwan's 41 was the only resistance, but it was nowhere near enough as England wrapped up a crushing victory.
3:18 PM IST English batters tightened the screws - Rain wiped out the morning session on Day 2, but once play finally got underway, England’s batters took control and steadily turned their advantage into a commanding one. Cox went on to make 73, while Root added 66, with the pair putting together a 150-run partnership. Harry Brook then took the attack to Pakistan with a rapid 91 off 93, putting on 120 with Dan Lawrence, who added a brisk 51. Brook was given a life early on and made Pakistan pay, while Ali Usman was the only bright spot for Pakistan with his maiden Test five-for. England eventually closed on 366/8, holding a 195-run lead and firmly in the driving seat heading into the third day.
3:15 PM IST Robinson and Tongue ran riot - England made a statement right from the opening delivery as Ollie Robinson struck with the first ball of the Test, setting the tone for a dominant day with the ball. Pakistan struggled to cope with the movement and discipline of England’s seamers, although Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq briefly steadied things with a useful 91-runpartnership, which ended up being their highest in the entire game. Robinson then returned to break that stand and finished with 5/51, while Josh Tongue was equally destructive, claiming 5/46 as Pakistan’s lower order was blown away. England’s response was measured rather than reckless, but they lost Ben Duckett and Emilio Gay before reaching 112/2, with Joe Root and Jordan Cox steadying the ship.
3:04 PM IST Root era begins perfectly - England have wrapped up a thumping innings-and-103-run victory, giving Joe Root the perfect start to his return as Test captain and laying down an early marker for this new chapter. It has been a near-flawless display from England, who dominated with bat, ball and in the field, while Root’s calm game awareness and decision-making stood out throughout. Pakistan, in contrast, simply could not catch a break as the game slipped further away with every session. They now have plenty to ponder and a serious fightback to mount at Lord’s.

Jofra Archer to Mohammad Abbas, no run

ballImg131.0kph

OUT! IN THE AIR...GONE! Done and dusted as Jofra Archer wraps things up here. England win by an innings and 103 runs. Archer hits the length hard, around off. Mohammad Abbas clears his front leg to slog it across the line but can only get a top edge. It goes high in the air and Dan Lawrence at gully settles under it to take a fine catch. All smiles in the England camp as they go 1-0 up in the series.

OUT! BOWLED 'EM! Gus Atkinson finally has a wicket in this Test. Probably the only thing that was missing for England. Fuller delivery, on off, shaping in a bit. Mohammad Rizwan gets low and has a wild slog across the line. He loses his shape and misses the ball completely as it goes through and crashes into the off pole. 2:11 PM IST DRINKS! Mohammad Rizwan's single off the first ball has proved too costly for Pakistan, and England are just 2 wickets away from the win now. Pakistan still trail by 127 runs, and it looks almost impossible for them to make a comeback from here on and at most, they can only delay the inevitable. England will keep it simple and go for the kill. Let's see how it pans out...

Ollie Robinson to Khurram Shahzad, no run

ballImg127.0kph

OUT! EDGED AND GONE! Mohammad Rizwan's decision to take a single on the first ball has backfired here. It was bizarre anyway, exposing Khurram Shahzad to Ollie Robinson for a whole over, and Pakistan have paid the price. Coming to the delivery, this is on a good length and around off, shaping away. Shahzad stays in his crease and just has a feel for it. It flies off the outside edge towards third slip, where Jordan Cox takes another sharp catch to his right.

OUT! TAKEN! Good teamwork from England, and they are inching closer to a big Test win here. Ollie Robinson serves this full and on off, straightening a bit off the deck. 1:48 PM IST Interesting insight from Nasser Hussain on air following the wicket of Saud Shakeel. Just before the dismissal, Joe Root moved away from his position at square leg, perhaps finding it uncomfortable to captain from there, and swapped places with Dan Lawrence. Interestingly, Lawrence stood much deeper and squarer than you would normally expect a square leg fielder to, but it worked perfectly as he found himself in exactly the right position to snaffle the catch. Whether Root intended the switch to have that outcome or not, only he and Lawrence will know!

Josh Tongue to Salman Agha, no run

ballImg146.0kph

OUT! LBW! Josh Tongue is absolutely running riot here. He pulls his length back a bit, lands this outside off, gets it to jag back in a long way. Salman Agha gets stuck in his crease and tries to block it out with his bat in front of his pad but plays down the wrong line. The ball sneaks past the inside edge to hit him on the front pad. There is an appeal, but the umpire takes his time. The ball lobs up, and Dan Lawrence at gully grabs it, and then the finger goes up. However, Agha sends this upstairs. First, UltraEdge confirms no bat is involved, so bat-pad is out of the question. But the Ball Tracking shows three reds, with the ball crashing into the leg stump. Excellent on-field decision, and Pakistan are 76/6 now.

1:20 PM IST Salman Agha is having some issues here with someone in front of the sight screen. The person has moved away, and we are good to go again.

He lands this one on a good length and just around off, threatens to angle in but then shapes away off the deck. Shan Masood has to play the line but does not move his feet at all and hangs his bat away from his body. It takes the outside edge and flies to first slip, where Ben Duckett grabs it with ease.

Josh Tongue to Saud Shakeel, no run

OUT! CAUGHT! Josh Tongue strikes in his first over. Once again, credit must go to Joe Root for putting a fielder in the right place. This is a fuller delivery, angling down the leg side. Not a wicket-taking delivery at all. Saud Shakeel, who has been trying to play his shots from the start of the session, tries to flick it off the pads. He connects more from the inside half of the bat. It flies to the right of short fine leg, who is standing a lot squarer than usual. Dan Lawrence puts in a dive to his right and takes a superb catch. Shakeel cannot believe that he has picked out a fielder here but has to walk back. Pakistan are 68/4, still trailing by 170 runs.

12:58 PM IST We are back for the post-Lunch session! The players are already out in the middle. Saud Shakeel and Shan Masood will resume batting for Pakistan. Jofra Archer will start proceedings with the ball. Here we go...
12:53 PM IST ... DAY 3, SESSION 2 ...
12:29 PM IST Afternoon drama awaits - The afternoon session promises high excitement as England will look to burst through the middle order while Pakistan will aim to bat through the entire period without further damage. Join us at 12.55 pm GMT after the Lunch Break.
12:24 PM IST Pakistan search for a historic rescue act - Trailing by 179 runs with 7 wickets in hand, Pakistan face a monumental mountain to climb, but the fight is far from over. Shan Masood and Saud Shakeel are out in the middle, and the key learning for the visiting batters is that survival requires immense patience against this moving ball. If they need an inspiration to recover from this, they can remember how Brendon McCullum and his side staged an unbelievable turnaround from a similar hole against India in the 2014 Wellington match. Even though that was a one-off instance in history, it proves that extraordinary fightbacks are possible if the batters refuse to give their wickets away.
12:25 PM IST LUNCH, DAY 3 - 12.18 pm GMT - England have tightened their grip further. After stretching their first innings total to 409 thanks to an entertaining 23 from Jofra Archer, the hosts carried that momentum straight into the field with a massive 238-run lead in their pocket. Jofra Archer then set Headingley alight by knocking over Imam-ul-Haq, while Azan Awais fell into a well-planned leg gully trap. With Abdullah Shafique also dismissed for 15 by Ollie Robinson, the English pacers have applied relentless pressure on a lively surface.

Maiden over! Dug into the surface, around off, Shan Masood gets on top of the bounce and cuts it but finds point.

12:06 PM IST This was interesting and quite funny after the 14th over! At 15-16 degrees Celsius, you would imagine finding enough sweat to shine the ball is mission impossible. But Harry Brook has found a workaround! Seemingly England's designated ball-shiner, Brook took the sweat straight off Ollie Robinson's back after the fast bowler completed his over, and then gave the ball a good polish. Smart thinking, really. Forget the temperature, just find the bloke doing the hardest physical work! A fast bowler charging in and putting in the hard yards is bound to break a sweat. A little unconventional, perhaps, but why waste a perfectly good source of moisture? Brook has found his human sweat dispenser! Funny, yes. Smart, absolutely.

11:35 AM IST DRINKS! Pakistan have already lost 2 wickets and are still trailing by 202 runs. However, the pair of Abdullah Shafique and Shan Masood are trying to play with positive intent, which is the way to go in this situation. England have bowled well, but they have also been guilty of being a bit too straight to the batters. However, they know that the pressure is very much on the visitors here, and with the pitch still offering enough assistance to the seamers, coupled with Joe Root's excellent planning, they will be hopeful of getting more breakthroughs before lunch.

Jofra Archer to Azan Awais, no run

ballImg140.0kph

OUT! CAUGHT! A wicket straight out of the planning room! Just after being taken for a boundary earlier in the over, Root had a quick word with Jofra Archer and promptly stationed himself at leg gully. The trap was set - attack Azan Awais' pads with either a full ball or a rising one and tempt him into the glance. Archer executes it to perfection, angling in a full ball around middle and leg. Azan leans across and goes for the glance, seemingly unaware of the danger lurking at leg gully. The shot goes aerially off the inside half of the bat and straight into the bread basket of Root. A beautifully planned wicket, brilliantly executed. Azan avoided the pair but can add only 9 runs. Both the Pakistan openers depart cheaply.
