8:53 AM IST Kraigg Brathwaite, the West Indies skipper says that Joshua and Bonner showed a commendable fight right from yesterday and as a batter, they should learn from it. He adds that the first innings is always important in Test matches and they were short there. He mentions that toss was crucial but as professional cricketers, they need to adapt. He applauded the bowlers for their show and praises Gabriel for the aggression he showed but adds that they were short in the batting department. He mentions that they need to learn from this game quickly and if they have to defend, then defend it with confidence.

8:58 AM IST Dimuth Karunaratne is the Man of the Match, he says that he was playing a long time, it was a good game for him. Says that they were a bit worried as they didn't play much Test cricket in between but he is proud of the players. Says that experienced players are helping young ones all the time. Tells that they do the job when they get the ball. Mentions that it was raining heavily so they went with two pacers but they will see the condition and the wicket before choosing the playing XI. Says that he needs to carry on the good role. He have some targets to achieve and will continue to help the team.

8:38 AM IST Earlier after opting to bat first, Dimuth Karunaratne showed his brilliance in the red-ball yet again as he scored an astonishing 147 runs. Dhananjaya de Silva, Pathum Nissanka and Dinesh Chandimal played wonderful cameos. Their brilliance was followed by the bowlers as they bundled out West Indies for 230. Sri Lanka extended their lead, thanks to yet another beautiful performance from their captain, Dimuth Karunaratne and their former captain, Angelo Mathews. After that, it was all spinners as they did the job. West Indies showed a good fight, things would have been different if their middle-order performed well but that isn't the case.

9:01 AM IST It was spin, spin and spin from Sri Lanka and why not when you are getting the reward. It was Lasith Embuldeniya and Ramesh Mendis who showed their magic skills and reduced West Indies for 18/6. The game was solely under the control of the hosts but unfortunately, they failed to break the 7th wicket partnership and it took the game bit away. They had to work hard for the wicket and the spinners were later awarded for their work. A five-fer for Ramesh Mendis and four-fer for Lasith Embuldeniya sealed the game.

8:44 AM IST West Indies showed good fight until the end. It looked like the visitors will be bundled out at the fag end of Day 4 after been 18/6 but since then, Bonner and Da Silva showed good spirit and turned the fortunes. Not all but enough for the game to resume on the last day. They continued to show their technical abilities and almost survived the first session without losing a wicket but Da Silva fell in the end. Nkrumah Bonner played more than 200 deliveries and he anchored until the end but Rahkeem Cornwall, Jomel Warrican and Shannon Gabriel failed to help him. Even luck was against them as it started raining just when Gabriel fell. A disappointing ending but a fighting show from West Indies and especially from Nkrumah Bonner.

9:04 AM IST Sri Lanka take the lead in this two-Test match series against West Indies by 1-0. It took much more time than we thought but credit to West Indies to stretch the innings. 7:00 AM IST Why the tension, you ask? 3 wickets needed, a minimum of 55 overs left, just the last recognized batting pair at the crease. Surely, the Lankans are firm favourites? Oh yes, they sure are. But sometimes, when nothing goes your way, you look up towards the heavens for some divine help. And that divine help is exactly what West Indies would be praying for. The forecast is very iffy from the afternoon, so if they can manage to bat for say another hour, who knows, they might well escape with a draw. So basically, Sri Lanka have got roughly an hour to take 3 wickets. Almost like the final hour. That makes this match even more interesting. 6:56 AM IST Sri Lanka would have been frustrated with the lack of wickets this morning. At least, that was seen from coach Mickey Arthur's frantic movements in the dressing room, not relaxing much. But this one wicket before Lunch would have revived their spirits. They have bowled beautifully, especially the spinners, but wickets have been hard to come by. And sometimes that happens. When the ball is turning too much, the bowlers tend to do a bit more than required and hence, struggle to get wickets.

6:54 AM IST West Indies began the day cautiously, with da Silva and Bonner playing it out sensibly. The deck was under covers, hence the ball did not quite spin as much as anticipated. Sri Lanka then resorted to seam bowling, especially to Bonner, from around the wicket. One believes that is where the hosts lost the ploy a little bit, not quite making use of the moisture on the wicket. Probably, fuller lengths would have been better. But the visitors rode that time out. There was some drama, an LBW review being turned down and a decision being overturned. But just when it seemed like luck was shining on West Indies, Lasith Embuldeniya struck, towards the end of the session, claiming Joshua Da Silva, breaking the mammoth stand of 100 in 268 balls.

6:51 AM IST Ahem, ahem! Half an hour? One hour? 90 minutes? Stand up all those of you, who felt that this game would go beyond the first session. Pat yourselves on your backs. And now, credit to West Indies. What a fine session of cricket. Yes, they are well down and out in this game, probably not far away from a defeat but still, they have fought hard. 73 runs in this session, in 35.3 overs. Slow, yes. But who is bothered about the run rate? Crucially, they lost just the one wicket and are still hanging in there.

6:35 AM IST Whoa! Almost another wicket for Sri Lanka, right at the stroke of Lunch! Everyone is smiling. Yes, literally. Dhananjaya de Silva is on his haunches, covering his smile. Or trying to. Embuldeniya takes his cap and smiles as well. Now, Dimuth Karunaratne is walking back with a smile on his face. Now, the camera pans onto the batsmen and aha... Rahkeem Cornwall has a gentle smile on his face. A really gentle smile for a big man. Oh my, even the umpire is smiling! Dear me, that was a close shave. A really close one. A full toss, on middle, should have been swatted away really. And Cornwall tried to. But he just could not get his bat down at the right time. To his near horror, he missed it, well almost. The ball curved in and luckily for him, took the under edge and hit him on the pads. That was heading straight onto the stumps and an LBW was on the cards, but for the under edge. A dramatic finish to the opening session on the final day!

The conditions have favored the spinners and they ran riot with the ball. Ramesh Mendis started the proceedings and he went onto pick up a four-wicket haul. Lasith Embuldeniya was the other spinner who found success today. He bagged a couple of wickets. Praveen Jayawickrama looked to be a real threat but could not find any success, although one day remains for him to strike. Sri Lanka, need only 4 wickets to take a lead in this Test series and they would be eager to finish things quickly on the final day.
