Melbourne Renegades beat Melbourne Stars by 4 wickets

Commentary

10:35 AM IST The latest season of the Big Bash League is really starting to heat up with the advent of the new year and we are getting some really entertaining games at the moment. The action doesn't stop right here as we now head to the West Coast, to the Perth Stadium, where the Perth Scorchers are taking on the Adelaide Strikers in the second game of the day. The Scorchers are batting first in that game, and you can simply switch tabs and tune in to our coverage. Cheers!
10:35 AM IST Josh Brown is the Player of the Match for his match-winning knock. He says it was nice to get a few boundaries early, before pulling the tempo back to manage the chase. Believes that he wasn’t far away from a big score since he was doing the right things off the field. Shares that watching the final overs from the sidelines made him feel like he should have been out in the middle, and he admits that he panicked and got out, but he is relieved and happy that the team got over the line. Brown says Will Sutherland has been unbelievable to watch over the last few years and was outstanding once again on the night. Adds that this was the biggest crowd he has ever played in front of. Brown reflects on how close they came last season before Glenn Maxwell took the game away from them, and says registering his first win in a Melbourne Derby makes this one all the more special.
10:31 AM IST The Presentation ceremony...
10:31 AM IST Earlier in the day, Will Sutherland won the toss and opted to bowl first. A decision that was backed up nicely by his bowlers. Sam Harper did come out of the blocks quickly but the Renegades managed to get wickets in a heap right after the Powerplay. Melbourne Stars were languishing at 55/4 when Glenn Maxwell fell and once Gurinder Sandhu got rid of Marcus Stoinis as well, the Renegades looked completely in control. Then came the fightback from Hilton Cartwright and Tom Curran and the Renegades let things slip a long way at the death.
10:33 AM IST Marcus Stoinis will be feeling the burden of 68,000 fans who came to the MCG today and almost all of them were Melbourne Stars supporters. The Stars did brilliantly to make a comeback but lapses in the field, especially from Tom Curran and the Powerplay, cost them dearly. Mitchell Swepson was the standout bowler and the likes of Peter Siddle and Haris Rauf did well to finish off strongly but seeing Curran being patchy in the field, Stoinis decided to take the final over himself and once he got hit for a six off the very first ball, the momentum shifted completely and the Stars lost a second humdinger in a row.
10:25 AM IST One of the games of the season and it has fittingly come in the Melbourne Derby. The tension was palpable out in the middle but Will Sutherland was the coolest man out there. Needing 174 for the win, the Renegades lost Tim Seifert early in the chase. Josh Brown kept throwing caution to the wind and managed to get away a few crucial boundaries early on. Brown and Mohammad Rizwan added 103 runs for the 2nd wicket but once Brown got out after a brilliant 84 (48), things started to slow down. Rizwan hobbled his way into the 40s before getting out himself and the middle order started to crumble. It was the skipper who took matters into his own hands and got a couple of big hits away in the very last over to take his side over the line.
10:44 AM IST Are you not entertained? Will Sutherland, a.k.a. the Chief, has pulled it off in front of a scintillating MCG crowd and what a moment it is for the Renegades' skipper. An absolute all-time classic in the Melbourne Derby but it is the visiting side, Melbourne Renegades, who grab bragging rights and take home the first-ever 'Melbourne Mace.'

ballImg128.9kph

SIX! Will Sutherland has done it for the Melbourne Renegades! He is all pumped up as he thumps his chest. Stoinis goes searching for the yorker but ends up serving it right in the slot, on middle. Sutherland stays deep in the crease and gets low to find the elevation. He just clobbers it straight back over the bowler's head for a flat six. The 'Gades win by 4 wickets. Jackson Warne is out on the field to present the 'Melbourne Mace' to Sutherland.

19.2

ballImg115.0kph

Two more! Dug in short, over middle. Will Sutherland makes room by moving to the leg side and flat bats it to the right of long on for a couple of runs. A wayward throw at the batting end allows Will to complete the second run with ease.

Haris Rauf to Oliver Peake, 1 run

ballImg140.0kph

OUT! OLIVER PEAKE IS RUN OUT! A risky second run attempted, and Peake has paid the price. Full and at pace, on the pads, Oliver whips it off the pads wide of deep square leg. Blake Macdonald charges across to his left and gets rid of the ball quickly. He throws it on the bounce to the batting end and Peake is committed to the second run. He puts in a dive but still falls short as Sam Harper gathers and whips the bails off in a flash.13 runs needed off the final over.

10:22 AM IST Drama at the 'G.' Blake Macdonald with a bullet of a throw from the deep and Sam Harper does brilliantly as well. Was that worth the risk from Oliver Peake? We will find out soon but for now, Peake is RUN OUT!
2
18.5

Haris Rauf to Oliver Peake, 2 runs

ballImg126.2kph

DROPPED! Tom Curran is the culprit. His miserable night in the field continues. A massive moment in the game. Pace off again but this is fuller, on off. Peake swings to go down the ground this is skied off the bottom half of the blade. It goes very high in the air beside the strip on the leg side. Curran moves to his right from mid-wicket and does settle under it but fails to hold on. Oliver called for two straight away as soon as the ball went up and he managed to complete it.

6
18.4

Haris Rauf to Oliver Peake, 6 runs

SIX! Picked up and dispatched this time! Rauf drags the length back a bit and sticks to the off-cutter. This time, Peake backs away and waits for the ball to arrive. He mows it off the back foot and deposits it many rows back over wide long on for a six.

18.3

Haris Rauf to Oliver Peake, no run

Off-cutter from Rauf, on a good length, going across the left-hander. Oliver Peake clears the front leg for a swipe across the line but does not pick the variation. He swings early and fails to connect. Well bowled!

18.2

Haris Rauf to Will Sutherland, 1 run

Angled in at the sticks, on a length, Sutherland taps it between cover and mid off and crosses over.

2
18.1

Haris Rauf to Will Sutherland, 2 runs

Good running, not the best of throws though! On a back of a length, on middle and leg. Sutherland hops and tucks it with soft hands through the vacant square leg region. Hilton Cartwright charges in off the ropes but he has a lot of ground to cover. He fires in a throw at the batting end but it reaches the keeper on a couple of bounces and Will gets home with a dive.

Peter Siddle to Jake Fraser-McGurk, no run

ballImg121.9kph

OUT! CAUGHT! A bit of a nothing shot from Jake Fraser-McGurk. Peter Siddle and Marcus Stoinis are thrilled to bits and they get the crowd going. Skidding through, on a hard length, on middle. Fraser-McGurk stays on the back foot, clears the front leg and has a swing at it. He is rushed and cuts across the ball. Slices it towards cover, where Stoinis times the jump to perfection and takes a good reverse cup catch over his head. 4 (9) for JFM. Melbourne Renegades are now 148/5, needing 26 runs in 13 balls.

17.3

Peter Siddle to Hassan Khan, no run

OUT! CAUGHT! Four, four and out for Hassan Khan against Peter Siddle. The Aussie veteran lets out a big roar, and he is all pumped up. Pace taken off by Siddle and bowled into the surface, over middle. Khan tries to slam it more towards deep mid-wicket with a horizontal bat, but ends up hitting it a lot straighter down to long on. It goes flat and straight to Thomas Rogers in the long on region and he makes no mistake.

4
17.2

Peter Siddle to Hassan Khan, 4 runs

Haris Rauf to Mohammad Rizwan, no run

ballImg144.7kph

9:33 AM IST DRINKS BREAK! Nicely poised at the 'G' and the crowd is absolutely electric right now. Melbourne Stars have done well to pull the scoring rate back but Melbourne Renegades have two set batters at the crease and would look to shift gears post the break. Peter Siddle to Mohammad Rizwan, 4 runs

ballImg138.7kph

FOUR! Well, we saw a great piece of fielding just a ball back and now we see some ordinary work in the deep as well. On a good length and outside off, glided away down to deep third for a single by Rizwan. However, Tom Curran attacks the ball a bit too aggressively and lets it through for a boundary. The Renegades are 43/1 after the Powerplay.

Peter Siddle to Josh Brown, 1 run

ballImg129.6kph

Wow, that is a magnificent effort in the deep from Mitchell Swepson and somehow, he has managed to avoid touching the boundary ropes. Length ball at the stumps, Josh Brown picks it up and launches it wide of deep mid-wicket. Swepson runs across and leaps up to take the catch but realises he is going over and flicks it back in. The replays show that Swepson just misses flicking the ropes with his foot by an inch or so, and it will just be a single.

Haris Rauf to Tim Seifert, no run

OUT! CAUGHT! Haris Rauf strikes in his first over and he is just a natural wicket-taker. Not the best delivery from Rauf as this is bowled a bit shorter and angling down leg. Tim Seifert gets inside the line to play the pick-up shot but gets a top edge. The ball flies down to long leg where Hilton Cartwright just settles inside the ropes and takes a solid catch. The Renegades are 24/1 now.
