The pair came together at 113-3 in the 30th over with Pietersen making 90 not out from 82 balls and Flintoff 78 from 70 as they put on 158 - a record for the fourth wicket in a ODI at Headingley.
After playing themselves in carefully the pair unleashed a torrent of boundaries to lift England up to a daunting total for the tourists to chase under lights.
