From Shastri to Kumble: Frontrunners for next coach of Team India
As BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) get down to shortlist the names for India’s next coach in Kolkata, HT looks at the front-runners for the post
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) got down to shortlist the names for the national team’s coach on Tuesday, a post which has been lying vacant since Ravi Shastri’s term as team director came to an end after India’s semifinal exit from the World T20 in March this year.

Although Sanjay Bangar has been appointed interim coach for the ongoing tour of Zimbabwe, the BCCI will look to finalise the candidate by June 24, well ahead of India’s tour of West Indies next month.
BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), formed to shortlist the candidates, comprises Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, Sachin Tendulkar and convenor Sanjay Jagdale.
HT looks at the front-runners for the post:
Anil Kumble

The former India skipper has no coaching experience but has mentored Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians. Sharing the dressing room with Ganguly, Tendulkar and Laxman and his business relations with Laxman through his sports training and consulting company Tenvic, makes the 45-year-old a favourite. He made a 45-minute presentation on Tuesday.
Ravi Shastri

The former India captain is backed by Test skipper Virat Kohli, and that gives him the edge. He was team director since the tour of England in 2014 and quit after the loss in the World T20 semifinal in India early this year. His commentating duties come in the way though. He was not present in Kolkata but was interviewed through video conferencing.
Sandeep Patil

The current chairman of selectors says he is yet to be called for an interview by the BCCI. He has the experience of coaching Kenya in the mid 90s.
Lalchand Rajput

The ex-India opener has experience in coaching the India A and Under-19 teams. He was manager of the India team that won the 2007 World T20 and the subsequent tri-series in Australia. He made a 45-minute presentation on Tuesday.
Pravin Amre

The former India batsman is credited with helping a lot of India batsmen technically, especially Ajinkya Rahane. He may be considered as a batting coach. His presentation stretched to a little over an hour.
Stuart Law

The ex-Australia cricketer, who is now a British citizen, has been into coaching since 2011. He has coached Sri Lanka, is credited with reforming Bangladesh and served as batting coach of the Australia team.
Other names doing the rounds
Andy Moles, who was batting coach of the Afghanistan team.
Tom Moody has the experience of coaching Sri Lanka. The former Australian cricketer recently coached Sunrisers Hyderabad to their first IPL title.
Vikram Rathour, Balwinder Singh Sandhu, Venkatesh Prasad and Robin Singh are some of the others who are said to have applied.
