The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) got down to shortlist the names for the national team’s coach on Tuesday, a post which has been lying vacant since Ravi Shastri’s term as team director came to an end after India’s semifinal exit from the World T20 in March this year.

Although Sanjay Bangar has been appointed interim coach for the ongoing tour of Zimbabwe, the BCCI will look to finalise the candidate by June 24, well ahead of India’s tour of West Indies next month.

BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), formed to shortlist the candidates, comprises Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, Sachin Tendulkar and convenor Sanjay Jagdale.

The former India skipper has no coaching experience but has mentored Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians. Sharing the dressing room with Ganguly, Tendulkar and Laxman and his business relations with Laxman through his sports training and consulting company Tenvic, makes the 45-year-old a favourite. He made a 45-minute presentation on Tuesday.

The former India captain is backed by Test skipper Virat Kohli, and that gives him the edge. He was team director since the tour of England in 2014 and quit after the loss in the World T20 semifinal in India early this year. His commentating duties come in the way though. He was not present in Kolkata but was interviewed through video conferencing.
