Happy to mentor, Nehra undecided on India bowling coach role

Left-am pacer Ashish Nehra, currently recuperating in London after a right knee surgery, is happy to mentor the new crop of Indian fast bowlers, but is yet to take a call on assuming the role of India’s bowling coach.
“I haven’t decided anything yet on my future after playing. I am still playing and will try to help all the youngsters as much as I can while playing with them, as I am doing now,” he told HT on Wednesday.
Nehra’s comments come a day after media reports said former India team director, Ravi Shastri, and his support staff of Sanjay Bangar, R Sridhar and Bharat Arun were keen to apply again for their respective posts. The Indian Board is seeking applications for the coach’s job.
Nehra, who was India’s most successful bowler in the World T20 with Hardik Pandya, is said to share an excellent rapport with young pacers, always willing to pass on tips. He was also regarded as the bowling captain of new IPL champions Sunrisers Hyderabad until he broke down ahead of the playoffs. His name has been doing the rounds for the post with that of his former new-ball partner Zaheer Khan.
“I will teach them (youngsters) whatever little I know and at the same time will try to learn from them too. It is all about helping each other and moving forward,” he added.
The 37-year-old, who has played 17 Tests, 120 ODIs and 23 T20 Internationals, made a sterling comeback to the national team this year after a five-year hiatus, impressing with pace, swing and control in Australia.
He followed it up with solid performances in the home series against Sri Lanka, and in the Asia Cup and World T20, where he took five wickets from as many games at a miserly economy rate of 5.94. He was one of the two Indians in the ICC’s World T20 team of the tournament.
Nehra suffered high-grade tendon injury on his knee during a league match against Kings XI Punjab and underwent surgery in London.
