India vs NZ first Test: Kiwi fightback leaves hosts at 291/9 on Day 1

Virat Kohli won the toss and opted to bat in the first of the three-Test series against New Zealand at Kanpur’s Green Park stadium on Thursday.

New Zealand fought back brilliantly after the first session to leave India at 291/9 at stumps on the first day of the first Test in Kanpur on Thursday.

Cheteshwar Pujara and Murali Vijay took India to 105/1 at lunch after captain Virat Kohli won the toss and opted to bat. From 154/1, the hosts lost three wickets, those of Pujara, Kohli and Vijay in the space of 9.4 overs as the Kiwis fought back.

The Kiwis kept chipping away at the wickets, with Trent Boult and Mitchell Santner picking up three apiece before Umesh Yadav’s rearguard action ensured India weren’t bowled out on Day 1.
