23:08 hrs IST: That is all we have from here. Join us tomorrow for the Eliminator between Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals. Bye Bye.
23:05 hrs IST: Faf du Plessis, Man of the Match: I reflected on the games I’ve played here in Mumbai and the runs I’ve scored. I just said in the change room tonight, how did we win that game. It was looking out of reach. Everything went our way towards the end. Rashid Khan was a handful on that wicket.
23:02 hrs IST: MS Dhoni, CSK captain: They bowled very well. There was a bit for the fast bowlers initially. Bhuvi bowled really well and he was backed up well by Rashid. We lost three-four in the middle and that put pressure. Obviously they have a mystery bowler. Good to win games like this. It’s about constantly improving.
22:56 hrs IST: Kane Williamson: The game swung back our way, the bowlers were outstanding only didn’t execute (in the death) as we have in the past. Now we have to do some hard work in Kolkata to come back here. We certainly back our death bowlers in that position. Most time we would defend that total, but credit to the CSK lower order. They bat a long way down and they kept us under pressure.
22:46 hrs IST: Sealed with a six. The moment is not so much like how MS Dhoni sealed the World Cup with a six in 2011 but the emotions are almost the same. Slower length ball on off stump, du Plessis pumps it over deep mid wicket for his fourth six and CSK win by two wickets to enter the final. For Sunrisers Hyderabad, they will now have to travel to Eden Gardens where they will meet the winner of the Kolkata Knight Riders vs Rajasthan Royals game.
22:40 hrs IST: Sunrisers Hyderabad’s one key death overs bowler has been smashed 17 runs and that too by Shardul Thakur. He has redeemed himself in style with a fine cameo. He gets two boundaries past short fine leg and he ends the over in style by blasting a full ball down the ground for a boundary. 17 runs in the 19th over and CSK need just six off the last over which will be bowled by Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
22:33 hrs IST: Sensational stuff from Faf du Plessis. He creams a drive through extra cover and then mauls a length ball over deep mid wicket. Faf then brings up his ninth IPL fifty with a glance past short fine leg and although Harbhajan Singh is run-out thanks to some great fielding from Rashid Khan, du Plessis smears a boundary to deep cover. 20 runs in the over and CSK need 23 off 12.
22:26 hrs IST: An outstanding over from Siddarth Kaul as he concedes just four runs. An over where he bowled the variations to perfection and nailed the yorker brilliantly.
22:21 hrs IST: A sensational over from Rashid Khan has come to an end. He ends with figures of 4-0-11-2. Outstanding bowling and he shows why he is the best in this format. CSK need 47 off 24 balls. A run-rate of over 12 with du Plessis the key. Can SRH pull this off or will CSK achieve yet another final-over win?
22:18 hrs IST: Another massive moment. Faf du Plessis is given LBW to a googly from Rashid Khan and he reviews, replay shows the ball to be just missing leg stump. CSK survive and we are headed for yet another thriller. This is a brilliant passage of play.
22:15 hrs IST: Chennai Super Kings are regaining the momentum thanks to Deepak Chahar and Faf du Plessis. However, there is a controversial moment as Chahar slams a catch to long on, Brathwaite lunges forward to take the catch. There is some confusion whether it is taken cleanly. The soft signal is out and replays are inconclusive and the decision stays. Big moment in the game.
22:06 hrs IST: Du Plessis relieves the pressure thanks to a misfielded boundary at deep mid wicket and then launching Shakib Al Hasan over long on for his second six. The South African right-hander holds the key now for CSK.
22:00 hrs IST: The end is near for CSK. This time Sandeep Sharma gets into the act. The knuckle ball and it is full on off stump, it sticks on the deck and Ravindra Jadeja can only chip it back to the bowler. Yet again, SRH have put on an exhibition in bowling.
21:54 hrs IST: Sublime bowling from Rashid Khan. The extra bounce and spin from the deck has Dwayne Bravo flashing at that delivery and Shikhar Dhawan takes it at slip. Sunrisers Hyderabad are closing in on the final.
21:51 hrs IST: Shakib Al Hasan tightens the screws even further. Just a short while back, there was a bit of concern for Sunrisers Hyderabad after Rashid Khan walked off the park looking sick. However, he is alright and looks set to torment the CSK batsmen, who are floundering on a difficult deck.
21:47 hrs IST: Another tight over from Rashid Khan. He has figures of 2-0-5-1. The required rate is nine per over. On this deck and with the kind of bowlers at Sunrisers Hyderabad’s disposal, the task is monumental.
21:42 hrs IST: Du Plessis eases the pressure slightly by swatting a pull shot to the deep backward square leg fence. However, in these conditions, the SRH bowlers are absolutely brilliant and the key strikers, in addition to the back-up are simply outstanding.
21:36 hrs IST: Fantastic stuff from Rashid Khan. That is a massive wicket. The googly floated up outside off, Dhoni is lured into the drive and the ball spins past the gap between bat and pad to crash into the stumps. Sunrisers Hyderabad are showing their bowling might.
21:32 hrs IST: Another tight over from the Sunrisers Hyderabad bowlers. Now, the situation becomes even more interesting with Rashid Khan coming into the attack. Can he get the vital wicket of MS Dhoni?
21:19 hrs IST: Siddarth Kaul, you beauty. Brilliant ball to get rid of Raina as the left-hander shuffles across and looks to flick but the ball hits the leg stump. Next ball, he uproots Ambati Rayudu’s off stump with a perfect yorker. MS Dhoni survives the hat-trick
21:10 hrs IST: Another tight over from Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Sunrisers Hyderabad are going as per plan when it comes to bowling. However, CSK’s batting is stronger than other opponents.
21:06 hrs IST: Suresh Raina gets going with a hat-trick of boundaries off Sandeep Sharma, two powerful cut shots and then drills a straight drive past the bowler. Raina and Rayudu hold the key for the chase now.
21:00 hrs IST: Just like in the SRH innings, a wicket falls in the first over of the CSK innings. Superb bowling from Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Good length ball which darts away sharply outside off, Shane Watson has a poke at it and the edge is taken by Shreevats Goswami. After the first over, CSK are 1/1. This will not be an easy chase.
20:45 hrs IST: Brilliant stuff from Carlos Brathwaite as he smashes yet another six and Shardul Thakur ends up conceding 50 runs in his bowling effort. Brathwaite’s brilliant 43 off 29 balls has helped Sunrisers Hyderabad get to 139/7, a total which the bowlers can defend. Remember, they have defended scores as low as 118 in this edition.
20:36 hrs IST: Brilliant spell from Lungi Ngidi. After his 4/10 in the previous match, he follows up with figures of 4-0-20-1. Sensational stuff and can Brathwaite create an impact in the final over?
20:30 hrs IST: Carlos ‘Remember the name’ Brathwaite shows glimpses of the form which made him special in that Eden Gardens final of the 2016 World T20. He clouts two sixes off Shardul Thakur well back into the stands at deep mid wicket. 17 runs in the over and SRH are eyeing a total in excess of 135.
20:21 hrs IST: SRH continue to struggle as they have not yet reached the 100 mark. Will this match be the repeat of the Mumbai Indians vs Sunrisers Hyderabad game where they managed just 118 and SRH defended the score? But, CSK are a different batting unit.
20:13 hrs IST: Yusuf Pathan falls and Sunrisers Hyderabad are in big trouble. Superb catch from Dwayne Bravo. Full ball outside off, Pathan drills the straight drive but Bravo latches onto the catch low to his right and he breaks into a jig. Fantastic stuff from CSK.
20:07 hrs IST: Ravindra Jadeja ends his spell with figures of 4-0-13-1. The stats could have been much better had Yusuf Pathan not gotten an edge to third man for a boundary. The veteran is getting some boundaries but he is also facing lot of dot balls.
20:05 hrs IST: Yusuf Pathan finally breaks the shackles with a much-needed boundary as he flicks Shardul Thakur for a boundary to deep mid wicket. First boundary in over five overs. Can Carlos Brathwaite’s big-hitting get them past 150?
20:02 hrs IST: Another one bites the dust. Quicker ball on middle and leg stump from Ravindra Jadeja, Manish Pandey looks to turn it to the leg side but gets a leading edge that is taken by the bowler. Next ball, Carlos Brathwaite survives a run-out chance.
19:58 hrs IST: Yusuf and Manish Pandey’s strike-rates are just over 50. Maybe, they have to be given a reminder that they are playing a T20, not an ODI. However, credit to Chennai Super Kings who are bowling beautifully.
19:53 hrs IST: The run-rate has gone below 6.5 after Ravindra Jadeja bowls another tight over. Yusuf and Manish are not in great form but this is the time to show their mettle.
19:49 hrs IST: Dwayne Bravo concedes seven runs in the ninth over as the first time-out of the IPL play-off begins. The run-rate is just under seven but SRH will need a lot of big scores and hits if they are to reach 150, which will be a good total on this deck.
19:43 hrs IST: A tight over from Ravindra Jadeja and SRH are 54/4 after eight overs. The onus is on Manish Pandey and Yusuf Pathan to boost the team towards a good score. The bowling has defended low totals but CSK are a different beast altogether.
19:38 hrs IST: Another one for Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad are in bog trouble. Short ball from Dwayne Bravo and Shakib goes for the pull, he gets a glove and MS Dhoni tumbles to his right to take a good catch.
19:34 hrs IST: Shakib Al Hasan gets going with a boundary to deep square leg but there is a slightly dodgy moment when Chahar bowls a high full toss. It apparently slipped out of his hand but umpire Marais Erasmus signals it as a dead ball instead of a no-ball. Very strange decision.
19:26 hrs IST: SRH have lost their skipper Kane Williamson and the dugout looks absolutely stunned. Short ball on leg stump, Williamson goes for the shot down fine leg but gets a glove that is taken by MS Dhoni. CSK are all over SRH like a rash.
19:23 hrs IST: Brilliant catch from Lungi Ngidi. Short ball outside off, Goswami flat-bats it low to the right of the bowler who bends low and takes a nice clean catch. Superb stuff from the South African pacer.
19:17 hrs IST: Williamson shows his class with a brilliant cover drive off Chahar. MS Dhoni tries his patent back of the hand flick onto the stumps but he misses. Goswami was a goner if that had hit. Some days, even the best can miss.
19:14 hrs IST: Lungi Ngidi gets some extra bounce and pace from the Wankhede deck. Shreevats Goswami gets an outside edge to a swinging delivery but it flies past second slip to the third man fence.
19:05 hrs IST: Brilliant start for Chennai Super Kings. Deepak Chahar bowls a full ball that swings away outside off, Shikhar Dhawan chases after it and drags the ball back onto the stumps. However, Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper Kane Williamson eases the pressure with three boundaries, one through point, one through backward square leg. After an action-packed first over, SRH are 12/1.
18:33 hrs IST: Chennai Super Kings have chosen to bowl against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Shane Watson replaces Sam Billings in the CSK side while SRH have remained unchanged. Here are the playing XIs.
Sunrisers Hyderabad: Shikhar Dhawan, Shreevats Goswami(w), Kane Williamson(c), Manish Pandey, Shakib Al Hasan, Yusuf Pathan, Carlos Brathwaite, Rashid Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Siddarth Kaul, Sandeep Sharma
Chennai Super Kings: Ambati Rayudu, Shane Watson, Suresh Raina, Faf du Plessis, MS Dhoni(w/c), Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo, Harbhajan Singh, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, Lungi Ngidi
18:26 hrs IST: Can Sunrisers Hyderabad overcome their losing streak and their poor record against Chennai Super Kings in this crucial match? Kane Williamson’s side have lost their last three games and have been defeated by Dhoni’s team in both league games.
18:18 hrs IST: A good stat to begin the first qualifier. This is concerning Chennai Super Kings. MS Dhoni’s men are the only side to win against every team in this edition at least once. When it comes to IPL and play-offs, CSK have a great relationship.
18:15 hrs IST: A warm welcome the first qualifier between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings. Both teams will be looking to avoid a detour to Kolkata and get a direct entry into the final, which will be played at the Wankhede stadium. The loser heads to the Eden Gardens where they will play the winner of the Eliminator between Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals.
Sunrisers Hyderabad may have finished top of the standings but three consecutive defeats leading to Qualifer 1 have laid bare the chinks in their armour.
While the batting has relied heavily on skipper Kane Williamson and Shikhar Dhawan, it’s the bowling that has come under pressure in those three games. While twice they failed to defend a total, in the third game they conceded 200-plus runs which the batsmen failed to chase.
On Tuesday, they will be up against Chennai Super Kings, one of the best teams in IPL history and who have made the final in six of the eight editions they have been part of. For Sunrisers to harbour any hopes of toppling the two-time champions, they will have to be on top of their game, as teams who have erred have paid the price.
