However, Gaikwad failed to cash in on his start as the CSK skipper was removed for 32 off 21 balls by spinner Rahul Chahar in the 7th over. Chahar also handed Shivam Dube a king pair in the game-changing over. Pacer Harshal Patel, who outsmarted Daryl Mitchell in the 8th over, handed a golden duck to MS Dhoni to silence the packed crowd in Dharamsala. This was the first time that Dhoni batted at No. 9 position in his T20 career. Harshal bagged three wickets and leaked 24 runs as the PBKS bowlers ended up restricting CSK to 167-9 in 20 overs.

Top-scoring for Chennai with the bat (43 off 26 balls), all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja bagged three wickets to set up Chennai's comfortable win over Punjab. Jadeja removed Curran and Ashutosh in the same over. The former CSK skipper shared six wickets with Mitchell Santner (1), Tushar Deshpande (2), Simarjeet Singh (1) and Shardul Thakur (1) to make sure PBKS posted only 139-9 in 20 overs. With the 28-run win over PBKS, Chennai have climbed to third spot on the IPL 2024 points table.
