Jasprit Bumrah on Sunday plucked his maiden five-wicket haul on home soil as he registered figures of 5/24 to bundle out Sri Lanka for 109 on Day 2 of the ongoing Day/Night Test in Bengaluru. The 28-year-old Bumrah removed Kusal Mendis, Lahiru Thirimanne, Angelo Mathews, Niroshan Dickwella, and Lasith Embuldeniya to achieve the feat.

It was Bumrah's eighth five-wicket haul in 29 Tests and first on home soil. He had picked three wickets on the opening day and added two more on the second as he sent back overnight batter Embuldeniya for one and Dickwella for 21. Spinner Ravichandran Ashwin wrapped up the innings and finished with two wickets alongside fast bowler Mohammed Shami.

Parthiv Patel remembered Bumrah's bowling exploits in first-class cricket, saying the pacer used to bowl a lot of bouncers to tailenders while coming round the wicket. The veteran wicketkeeper-batter also heaped praise on Bumrah for being an all-format player for India irrespective of conditions.

"There was never any doubt about Bumrah being a bowler for all conditions. He got the chance today and showed he can be effective even when the pitch is offering little swing. He removed the top-order with movement and plucked wickets with slower ones today.

"His range shows you his capability and adjusting to the surface. You have to modify your bowling according to the conditions and situation. He's proved his ability in every country and he picked up a fifer to put India in a good position today," Parthiv told Cricbuzz.

"When he came to play Test cricket, he had played a lot of Ranji Trophy. I talked about his range because he uses yorkers to remove tailenders but bowls different lines to other batters. He used to bowl bouncer while coming round the wicket, which is one thing that we haven't seen him doing much in international cricket. But he used to do that a lot in first-class cricket. Knowing his own strength and its repetitions helps Bumrah adjusts to new things," he further said.

India are in a strong position in the Day/Night Test, having bundled out Sri Lanka for 109 in the first innings and gaining a 300-plus lead. They have won both their previous day-night Tests at home, beating Bangladesh in 2019 and England last year. They lost to Australia in a floodlit Test at Adelaide in 2020.

A win in the ongoing pink-ball game will help India secure the Test series 2-0. They had won the first Test in Mohali by an innings and 222 runs.
